Prenatal Development and Smoking

Smokers can be expected to go through a lot of complications during pregnancy. The self-consistent breathing in by smoke throughout pregnancy could severely rupture the development of the child in the womb. The habit could result into placental abruption, a condition wherein the placenta comes detached from the womb and gets situated outside.
This makes the transference from nutrients by the mother to the child problematic as a result of which the fetus gets aborted. In some cases, the condition contributes to the birth of underdeveloped infants. Moreover, babies born by smoking mothers are more liable to suffer from brain deformities like cognitive problems. It has been observed that more than 50 per cent of unborn babies exposed to the lethal cigarette smoke in the womb are in all probability to suffer from mental retardation. Additionally, such unborn infants are as well at an enormous risk of developing lung diseases of classes attributable to continuous exposure to deadly chemicals and gases like carbon monoxide. These chemicals contribute changes in the structure of lung cells and keep the supply of oxygen absent from the developing child. In a lot of cases, this lethal smoke could be a possible cause for developing varied congenital abnormality among newborns with addictive mothers.
