Nicotine withdrawal is something that anyone quitting smoking will face, even the casual smoker that only smokes a few cigarettes a day. The reason for this is the body gets used to receiving nicotine, in the same way it gets used to medications, alcohol and other things. Nicotine is like a drug in the body, and when the body is without it, and then it will begin to crave this drug.
Once nicotine is stopped being provided to the body it will have withdrawal symptoms that can affect the emotions, can cause anxiety, can cause insomnia and other related addiction withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine withdrawal can disrupt thought patterns and cause depression, which combined with lost sleep can make working difficult when quitting smoking.
The withdrawal symptoms do pass within seven days, although this does not mean the urge to light up a cigarette is gone, this can continue for years though it can be easily avoided. Due to the emotional aspects of withdrawal symptoms family members will need to also understand that this is a part of quitting smoking and nicotine withdrawal symptoms, along with being irritable. |
