Smoking and High Blood Pressure

As you know that there are two factors affecting the blood pressure of a person; the amount of force caused by the pumping of the heart and the resistance of the arteries as blood flow through them every second. Therefore, if the blood pumps too strong and fast, a person may have high blood pressure. The same is true when the arteries become narrow making it harder for the blood to flow through.

Smoking itself cannot cause hypertension or high blood pressure. However, for the people who have existing heart-related diseases and hypertension, smoking is absolutely a big NO. Here are the facts why smoking is not advisable for people with hypertension;

Smoking always has bad effects on the arteries. Primarily, nicotine can make these arteries thick and stiff making the way of the blood narrow. Elasticity is also another thing that will be lost from arteries especially if a person is a heavy smoker. Lungs are in great danger. Respiratory-related diseases are also inevitable when a person is smoking. Because it is the primary source of oxygen in the body, once it cannot do its job well, the heart which is responsible in distributing the oxygen throughout the body can also be affected. Strokes are likely to happen when oxygen distribution is compromised.
